Our Abortion Stance

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is where we stand on abortion. Clinics IV Life is an apolitical and non religious entity. Our policy on abortions, where permitted by law, is outlined below.

Introduction

We firmly believe in a woman's right to autonomy over her body and her health. While we do not engage in politicking or religious debate on the topic of abortion, we support a woman's right to this procedure. In countries and states where it is permissible by law. our doctors will assist their patients to make an informed choice on termination.

The recent figures below from World Population Review indicate exactly what impact anti-abortion groups play in contributing to mothers dying and it stands as a shocking indictment of American healthcare

The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed country and the maternal mortality rate is higher than it has been in decades. Based on the most recent data from 2018 the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is 17.4 deaths per 100,000 births. The United States is also the only developed country to see maternal mortality rates rising. This is attributed to a few findings in an NPR report, including that hospitals are generally unprepared or underprepared for maternal emergencies during childbirth. Additionally, some doctors entering into maternal-fetal medicine were able to complete their training without training in a labor-delivery unit.

Louisiana’s maternal mortality rate of 58.1 deaths per 100,000 births is the highest in the United States. The rate is about four times higher for black mothers than it is for white mothers, an issue that boils down to implicit bias. 59% of black maternal deaths are preventable, compared to 9% of white maternal deaths.

Healthcare's most unwelcome bedfellows, religion & politics

Arguing for the sanctity of life is a first world indulgence that does not consider the sheer poverty and suffering many children are born into. The lives of these children are often short lived, as their brief existence is ravaged by disease, hunger and no access to care.

In countries where churches and politicians are allowed to dictate health policy, it more often than not, results in a ban on medically assisted abortion. Much of the blame for the avoidable suffering and misery endured by these "unwanted infants" can be laid squarely at the door of religion and the politicians who support them.

Protecting the health of the mother must take prioroty

There are many instances in medical literature that justify terminating a pregnancy to protect the wellbeing of the mother. Abortions take place when women are septic, hemorrhaging, and near death, clearly underscoring the medical need for termination to protect the health of the mother

Every effort should be made to ensure termintion is available as a part of maternal care and that that care is provided in the safety of a professional medical environment to ensure the mothers wellbeing. It is also critical that practitioners be protected from punitive actions for delivering life saving care.
