There are basic checks we make to ensure you and your baby are not at risk and many of these results will be monitored over the course of your pregnancy. Here is a list of what we typically check when you visit us for your consultation.
If this is your first child, your doctor or nurse will also discuss what to expect during your pregnancy and advise you on supplements. For example 400 micrograms of folic acid daily reduces the risk for neural tube defects by 70%. If you do not have access to these supplements for any reason or cannot afford them, please tell your nurse or doctor.
You'll have three ultrasounds during the course of your pregnancy, and if your doctor decides you need more intensive care, you may be scheduled for extra ultrasounds to keep you and baby safe. You can find out more about these here. You can also choose to deliver your child in one of our birthing rooms under the watchful eye of a competent midwife, with a doctor on call.
Depending on where you delivered your baby, you may have received a newborn screening. This test is very important and MUST be given to the baby in the first 24 hours of life. Newborn Screening (NBS) is a simple procedure to find out if your baby has a congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation or even death if left untreated. You can bring your newborn in to the clinic within 24 hours of delivery to receive the test for free.
You can bring your newborn to the clinic for a number of reasons for free treatment.
You must ensure your baby receives all it's vaccinations when they are due. Your local healthcare workers will usually assist you and if you cannot access these regular clinics for vaccination, please tell our doctors, who can help you secure any missed vaccines to keep your child safe and healthy.
A nutritionist will visit the clinic every two weeks and you can come in for advice on feeding your baby, milk products (if you cannot breastfeed), starting solids and other dietary advice for both you and baby.
If you are unemployed and have no source of income, you can request free treatment at one of our clinics. Depending on the country you live in, clinic staff will ask that you verify the fact you are indigent. For example, in the Philippines, your local Barangay secretary can issue you with a certificate of indigency, which you will need to bring in to the clinic.
There are other reasons we may be able to offer you free care and if you are struggling, please come in and talk to us. Our goal is to ensure you have access to healthcare and we will bend over backward to help you where possible. Anything you discuss with any clinic member of staff, our nurses or our doctors, is treated in the strictest of confidence. We're here to help you have a safe and healthy pregnancy.
